EWR terminal by terminal
Newark Liberty has three passenger terminals linked by the AirTrain:
- Terminal A, the new building opened in 2023, handles mostly domestic flights. Pre-arranged car pickups use the arrivals level curb at the signed pickup areas.
- Terminal B carries a mix of domestic and international airlines and has its own customs hall.
- Terminal C is the largest, dominated by one hub carrier, with domestic and international gates.

Getting into Manhattan from Newark
The choice of crossing is the whole trip. The Lincoln Tunnel serves Midtown, the Holland Tunnel serves Lower Manhattan and SoHo, and the George Washington Bridge suits the Upper West Side and upper Manhattan. All three are tolled eastbound by the Port Authority, and vehicles entering Manhattan below 60th Street have also paid the congestion relief zone charge since January 2025. Downtown Newark, the Ironbound and the venues
Downtown Newark centres on Broad Street and Market Street, with law firms, insurers and utilities in the office towers near Military Park and the Gateway Center complex attached to Newark Penn Station. Across the rail tracks, the Ironbound district around Ferry Street is known for Portuguese, Spanish and Brazilian restaurants, a frequent dinner drop for visitors. University Heights holds Rutgers University-Newark and NJIT.
Event traffic comes mostly from two venues. The Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils and a major concert arena, sits a short walk from Penn Station. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is on Center Street by Military Park. In April, Branch Brook Park in the North Ward holds one of the largest cherry blossom displays in the United States. Further out, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, home of the Giants and Jets, is about 12 miles away; for games and concerts there we plan drops and pickups at agreed points outside the stadium's closed lots. Newark Penn Station and the rail links
Newark Penn Station is served by Amtrak's Northeast Corridor trains, NJ Transit lines and the PATH train to the World Trade Center. A separate stop, Newark Liberty International Airport Station, connects the Northeast Corridor to the airport AirTrain. Many travellers take the train one way and a car the other. Cruise and private aviation near Newark
Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne is the nearest cruise terminal to EWR, about 20 to 30 minutes away; our Cape Liberty page explains drop-off at the pier. Port Newark itself is a container port, not a passenger terminal. Private flyers usually use Teterboro or Morristown, both within an hour of downtown Newark.
New Jersey driving realities
Driving is on the right. The New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) and the Garden State Parkway are toll roads with E-ZPass and cashless gantries. New Jersey highways use jughandles instead of left turns on many roads, and the Pulaski Skyway and Route 1&9 carry heavy truck traffic around the port. Expect construction on the approaches to the Hudson crossings and at the airport, where roadway work continues around the terminals.
Customs and arrival notes at EWR
Newark is one of the main international gateways for the New York area. Non-US passport holders usually need a visa or an approved ESTA before travel, and the customs queue after a long-haul flight can run from a few minutes to well over an hour at the evening bank of European arrivals. Global Entry and Mobile Passport Control shorten the wait for eligible travellers.
