Terminal A: the airport's single passenger terminal
Abu Dhabi's airport was renamed Zayed International in 2024, after all airlines moved into the new Terminal A. The older Terminals 1, 2 and 3 no longer handle scheduled passenger flights. Terminal A is Etihad's hub and one of the largest single terminal buildings in the region, with long piers, so allow walking time from the gate.

Standard service is curbside collection at the zone Zayed International designates for pre-booked chauffeured cars outside Terminal A arrivals. Once you have your luggage, contact the chauffeur and you will be directed to the exact pillar or bay. On a standard booking the chauffeur waits at the vehicle, not inside the arrivals hall.

Immigration and customs at Zayed International
Visa rules for the UAE depend on your passport: many nationalities receive a visa on arrival or visa-free entry, and others need a visa issued in advance. Official guidance is on the UAE government portal. Eligible travellers can use smart gates. Early-morning Etihad banks bring the longest queues, so plan on 30 to 60 minutes from landing to the car. Customs rules on some medicines are strict; carry prescriptions for anything you bring.

Zayed International sits on the mainland about 30 km east of downtown Abu Dhabi, close to Yas Island and Khalifa City.

Public transport alternatives
Public buses connect Zayed International with the city, and taxis queue outside arrivals. There is no metro or passenger rail link from the airport. Given the distances in Abu Dhabi and the summer heat, most business and leisure travellers use a car for the first leg.

Grand Prix, ADIPEC and the event calendar
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit is usually held in late November or early December and is the busiest weekend of the year. ADIPEC, the energy exhibition at ADNEC, is usually in November, and ADNEC hosts other major exhibitions through the cooler months. Private aviation and cruise arrivals
Business jets often use Al Bateen Executive Airport, close to downtown, rather than Zayed International; see Al Bateen private aviation. Cruise passengers embark at Zayed Port, about 30 to 40 minutes from AUH.
Resort arrivals on Yas Island and Saadiyat
Two islands take a large share of leisure transfers from AUH. Yas Island, a short drive from the terminal, is home to Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, Etihad Arena and a string of hotels around the marina and the beach. Saadiyat Island, north of the city, has the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Cultural District and several beach resorts. Resorts on both islands have gated entrances and their own porte-cochère arrangements, so enter the hotel name, not just the island.
Arriving at AUH and flying out of DXB
Some itineraries land in Abu Dhabi and leave from Dubai, or the other way round. A one-way transfer between Zayed International and Dubai International usually takes 1 h 20 to 1 h 40, depending on traffic through Dubai. Book it as an intercity transfer and allow a generous margin for check-in at the departure airport, especially in the evening peak.
Driving in Abu Dhabi
The UAE drives on the right. Abu Dhabi's Darb toll gates charge at peak times on the bridges to Abu Dhabi Island, and speed limits are enforced by cameras. The weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year and shifts traffic peaks to the evening.
Fare, waiting and cancellation
The fixed fare includes the car, chauffeur, flight tracking and the included waiting: 60 minutes after an international landing, then 15-minute blocks. Planning ranges are on rates.
