Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV)
ABV is about 40 km west of the city centre. International flights use the international terminal that opened in 2018; domestic flights, including the busy shuttle routes to Lagos, use the separate domestic terminal nearby. Standard pickup is at the airport's designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals, and the chauffeur shares the vehicle and plate details by message once you land. Entering Nigeria: the e-Visa and health rules
Nigeria ended visa on arrival in 2025 and moved short visits to an online e-Visa system, with decisions sent by email. Apply well before travel through the Nigeria Immigration Service, and carry the approval with your passport. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required. The Airport Road passes Lugbe and joins the city near the Area 1 junction. Traffic builds on weekday evenings, especially near the city end.
The government district and diplomatic quarters
Abuja's centre is organised around the Three Arms Zone at the foot of Aso Rock, where the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly and the Supreme Court stand. Access to these is controlled, and visitors need an appointment and an exact gate; put it in the booking notes so the chauffeur goes to the right entrance. The International Conference Centre handles summits, and Eagle Square hosts the national ceremonies for Democracy Day on 12 June and Independence Day on 1 October, when central roads close. Security-conscious travel in Abuja, stated factually
The Federal Capital Territory is heavily policed, with checkpoints on main roads and security screening at hotels and government buildings. Even so, several governments, including the US State Department, advise travellers to reconsider travel to Nigeria overall and to avoid certain states entirely; read the current US travel advisory or your own government's advice. What that means in practice:
- Pre-book airport transfers and avoid unmarked cars at arrivals.
- Keep travel to daylight where possible on roads leaving the city.
- Share itineraries with your security team; corporate accounts include duty-of-care trip data.
- Vary routines for long stays and keep the chauffeur's details on your phone.

Intercity travel from Abuja
The highway to Kaduna, about 190 km north, has a record of kidnapping incidents, and many organisations do not permit road travel on it.
