Kotoka airport transfers: how the booking works

Enter your flight number and destination in the booking engine on this page or at book. The engine shows one price for the car you choose, covering the chauffeur and fuel, with Kotoka access charges and gratuity added at actual cost. There is no meter, so the long evening crawl on Liberation Road does not change what you pay. The flight is tracked, and your chauffeur is timed to the actual landing. Included waiting is 60 minutes after an international arrival, 30 minutes after a domestic flight from Kumasi or Tamale, and 15 minutes at a hotel or office, then 15-minute blocks. Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 at Kotoka International

Kotoka sits inside the city, about 8 to 10 km north of the old centre. International flights use Terminal 3, opened in 2018 with capacity for around five million passengers a year. Domestic flights use Terminal 2. The standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals, where the chauffeur meets you after customs; the car details arrive by message once you land. A meet and greet inside the arrivals hall is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations. The airport operator, Ghana Airports Company, publishes terminal notices.

Entry rules for Ghana in 2026

Ghana moved to a mandatory e-Visa on 25 May 2026, and the old habit of buying a visa at the Kotoka counter has been phased out for most travellers. Holders of African passports still apply online but pay no fee under the policy announced for Africa Day, and ECOWAS citizens can generally enter without a visa. Everyone should carry a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, which is checked on arrival. Confirm the current requirements with the Ghana Immigration Service before you fly.

Drive times from Kotoka

Accra's business districts and neighbourhoods

Airport City, right beside the runway, is the main modern office district, with bank and telecom headquarters, the Marriott and the Holiday Inn a short walk from the terminal. Airport Residential Area and Cantonments hold embassies, the US Embassy among them, and many diplomatic residences. Ridge has government offices, hospitals and the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City. Osu is the evening district, with Oxford Street's restaurants and bars. East Legon is the newer residential and commercial area to the northeast, and Labone and Roman Ridge are quieter residential areas close to the centre. Most business visitors combine several of these in one day, which suits the hourly chauffeur service. Companies with regular Ghana travel set up corporate accounts for monthly invoicing and duty-of-care trip data.

Tema port and the industrial corridor

Tema, about 30 km east of central Accra, is Ghana's main container port and an industrial hub. The Accra-Tema Motorway is the direct route, and its traffic varies sharply with the time of day. Shipping agents and oil and gas firms book early-morning cars for port visits and shipping crew change movements; crew changes with several seafarers are planned by a coordinator and confirmed in writing.

Conference venues, hotels and the calendar

The Accra International Conference Centre and the Grand Arena beside it host summits and exhibitions. Black Star Square, also called Independence Square, is the setting for the 6 March Independence Day parade, when roads nearby close. Other dates to plan around:

• August: the Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Jamestown, and the Ga people's Homowo festival season, which runs into September.
• December: the festive season known locally as December in GH, when diaspora visitors, concerts and weddings fill hotels and cars. Book well ahead for the last two weeks of the month.

Road trips: Aburi, the Volta and Cape Coast

Aburi's botanical gardens in the hills are about an hour away and make an easy half day. Akosombo and the Volta Lake are a comfortable day trip. Cape Coast and Elmina castles, UNESCO World Heritage sites, are three to four hours west along the N1, so a day trip starts early; the Cape Coast area also hosts PANAFEST, usually in late July or August. Getting around Accra: traffic and roads

Ghana drives on the right. Traffic is the defining feature of the city: the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, the N1 (George Walker Bush Highway), Liberation Road and the Kwame Nkrumah Circle area slow badly from about 7 to 10 am and 4 to 8 pm. Street hawkers work many junctions, and potholes are common off the main roads during the rainy seasons, roughly April to July and September to October. Toll arrangements on Ghana's highways have changed several times in recent years.

Security-conscious travel in Accra

Accra is generally regarded as one of West Africa's calmer capitals, and most business travellers move around without incident. The usual urban precautions apply: keep valuables out of sight in traffic, use pre-booked transport at night, and follow your employer's travel-risk policy. Delegations and high-profile visitors can book secure transportation or government and diplomatic programmes, with armoured SUVs and sedans supplied by partners on request after a risk assessment.
