Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG): terminals and meeting point
The airport is at Dar El Beïda, about 20 km east of the centre. Most international flights now use the large terminal opened in 2019, while the older terminal handles mainly domestic flights and charters use a separate building; check your ticket, because the walk between them is long. The chauffeur waits curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals and messages you the car details after you clear immigration. Flights are tracked. Included waiting is 60 minutes from landing on international flights, 30 minutes on domestic flights and 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. Passport control and customs at ALG can be slow when several long-haul flights land together, and the 60 minutes is designed for it. A suburban train also links the airport with Agha station in the centre in about 20 minutes, run by SNTF, useful only if you travel light and your hotel is near Agha.

The wide ranges are real: the airport motorway and the ring roads clog at commuter hours and before Friday prayers, and checkpoints add minutes.
Districts a visitor needs to know
- Alger-Centre: the white colonial boulevards around the Grande Poste, Rue Didouche Mourad and the seafront arcades, with ministries and banks nearby.
- The Casbah: the UNESCO-listed old city on the hillside, reached on foot; the chauffeur drops at the lower or upper edge.
- Hydra, El Biar and Ben Aknoun: the green heights where most embassies, company offices and residences are, with narrow, winding streets.
- Bab Ezzouar: the business district near the airport, with the Algiers Marriott Hotel Bab Ezzouar and other international hotels, popular for short work trips.
- Mohammadia: on the bay, home to the Great Mosque of Algiers (Djamaa El Djazair), whose minaret of about 265 metres is visible from most of the city, and near the Pins Maritimes exhibition grounds.
- The west coast: Club des Pins, Moretti and Sidi Fredj, a protected residential and conference zone.
Hotels, conference venues and stadiums
The historic El Djazair hotel, formerly the Saint-George, sits in gardens above the centre, and the Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden overlooks the Jardin d'Essai. Near the airport are the Hyatt Regency Algiers Airport and the Bab Ezzouar hotels. On the west coast, the Sheraton Club des Pins Resort stands next to the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Centre, which hosts summits and major government events; access to the Club des Pins zone is controlled, so give us your accreditation details when booking. The Palais des Expositions at Pins Maritimes (SAFEX) hosts the Algiers International Fair, usually in June, and other trade shows through the year. Visas: plan before you fly
Unlike its neighbours, Algeria requires a visa in advance for most nationalities, including EU, UK, US and Canadian citizens. Applications go to an Algerian embassy or consulate and usually need a letter of invitation from an Algerian company, a hotel reservation or a certificate from a licensed travel agency. Requirements are set out by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Allow several weeks, and book the car once the visa is issued; our cancellation terms still apply if dates change.
Travelling securely in and around Algiers
Algiers has a heavy police and gendarmerie presence, with fixed checkpoints on the main roads; chauffeurs stop, show papers and move on. Foreign governments advise against travel to Algeria's border regions and much of the far south, and some advise increased caution countrywide; business trips within Algiers and along the coast are routine. Outside the capital, authorities sometimes assign police escorts to foreign visitors travelling by road, which can change timings. Photography of government buildings, police and military sites is prohibited.
For principals who need more, an armoured SUV or sedan can be supplied by a partner on request, after a risk assessment, through secure transportation. Check your own government's current advice, for example US travel advisories, before travelling.
Intercity and coast trips
Tipaza, with its Roman ruins by the sea, is about 70 km west and makes a good day trip. Blida is about 45 to 60 minutes south. The East-West Motorway runs to Oran, about 430 km and 4.5 to 5.5 hours, and to Constantine, about 430 km east and 5 to 6 hours; Béjaïa is 3.5 to 4 hours along the coast. These are fixed fares on intercity transfers, though for long drives many travellers take a domestic flight and book a car at the other end.

The Port of Algiers, below the centre, runs passenger ferries to Marseille and Spain; ferry arrivals are met at the terminal exit. Cancelling costs nothing beyond 72 hours before pickup; inside 72 hours the charge is 10%, inside 48 hours 50%, and inside 24 hours or for a no-show 100%.
