Islamabad International Airport: the long drive in
The airport opened in 2018 west of the city near Fateh Jang, replacing the old Benazir Bhutto airport in Rawalpindi. It has one large terminal for international and domestic flights. The Srinagar Highway (Kashmir Highway) carries most airport traffic and flows well outside the peaks.
Sectors, Blue Area and where visitors stay
The city grid runs in lettered and numbered sectors under the Margalla Hills. Blue Area, along Jinnah Avenue, is the commercial spine, with bank and corporate offices. G-5 holds the Diplomatic Enclave and many embassies, next to the Constitution Avenue ministries. Rawalpindi, the twin city
Rawalpindi adjoins Islamabad to the south and is a separate, older city with bazaars, the army headquarters and the main railway station. - Murree and the Galiyat: about 60 km, 1.5 to 2 hours up a winding road; winter snow and summer weekend crowds add time.
- Taxila: about 35 km, 45 to 60 minutes, for the museum and Gandharan sites.
- Khewra Salt Mine: about 160 km, around 2.5 hours via the M-2.

Sights inside the capital

Keep your passport or a copy with you. Visiting officials and staff of international organisations usually travel under their employer's security plan, and the chauffeur can follow those routes, times and reporting calls. Entry notes, cancellation and extras
From 1 January 2026 most visitors apply for a paid e-visa before travel on the Pakistan Online Visa System, and some nationalities can use an Electronic Travel Authorization.
