Allama Iqbal International Airport
Lahore's airport lies on the eastern side of the city, off the Airport Road near the Cantonment. It has an international terminal and a smaller domestic hall in the same complex. The Ring Road links the airport side to Johar Town and the motorway and is often the fastest route south and west.
Districts: from Gulberg to the old city
Gulberg is the modern commercial centre, with offices, restaurants on MM Alam Road and the Liberty Market area. DHA, near the airport, is the large planned residential and business district. Mall Road (Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam) runs through the colonial-era centre past the High Court, museums and the Pearl Continental Lahore and Avari Lahore hotels. Johar Town holds the Expo Centre and newer IT offices, with the Nishat Hotel nearby. The historic Faletti's Hotel stands off Egerton Road. The Walled City, Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens
Lahore Fort and the Shalimar Gardens are together a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Badshahi Mosque stands beside the fort at the head of the old city. Wagah: the border ceremony
The Wagah-Attari border with India is about 30 km east of central Lahore. The flag-lowering ceremony is held at sunset and draws large crowds, so leave the city at least two hours before sunset and expect a security check and a walk from the parking area. Vehicles cannot cross the border, and whether the crossing is open to travellers depends on the current rules of both countries; check before you plan a crossing.
Events and seasons
- February: the Lahore Literary Festival, usually held at the Alhamra Arts Council on Mall Road.
- February to May: Pakistan Super League matches at the Gaddafi Stadium, depending on the season's calendar, with road closures around the ground.
- November to January: the smog season. Visibility on the motorway can drop in fog and haze, the provincial government sometimes restricts activities, and journeys take longer.
- Wedding season: winter is the peak for large weddings; multi-car wedding transport is covered on wedding limousine.
- Trade fairs: textile, furniture and food exhibitions run at the Expo Centre through the year.
Which vehicle for Lahore
A Standard Sedan suits one or two travellers. An executive SUV is the choice for executives, wedding families and long motorway drives. Motorway and intercity routes
- Islamabad: about 375 km on the M-2, usually 4 to 5 hours. See Islamabad.
- Faisalabad: about 180 km on the M-3, 2 to 2.5 hours, for textile mills.
- Sialkot: about 130 km on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway, around 1.5 to 2 hours, for sports-goods and surgical-instrument factories.
- Multan: about 340 km on the M-3 and M-4, 4 to 4.5 hours.
Motorways such as the M-2 to Islamabad are tolled. Book as intercity transfers. Lahore Junction is the main station for trains to Rawalpindi and Karachi, and the Orange Line metro runs north-south across the city.
Driving and security notes
Pakistan drives on the left, and Lahore traffic mixes cars with motorbikes, rickshaws and donkey carts on some older roads. Police checkpoints appear near government buildings, stadiums and major hotels. Companies that send visitors with a security plan can have the chauffeur follow it; armoured SUVs and sedans come from partners on request, after a risk assessment (secure transportation). Entry rules, cancellation and extras
Since 1 January 2026 most visitors apply for a paid e-visa before travel through the Pakistan Online Visa System, and some nationalities qualify for an Electronic Travel Authorization. Child seats are free on request. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.
