Samui International Airport (USM)
The airport sits in the north-east of the island near Bophut. It is privately owned, with open-sided, thatched pavilions rather than one large terminal, and separate arrival areas for domestic and international flights. Most flights come from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, with regional services from cities such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and a few domestic links to Phuket, Chiang Mai and U-Tapao. Runway length and capacity limit the airport to smaller jets, so fares and seats can be tight in peak season.
Pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged vehicle area outside arrivals; the chauffeur sends the plate number and waiting spot as you land. A name-board meet and greet inside arrivals is an add-on. Add-ons are only available in selected locations. Traffic is light by city standards, but central Chaweng jams on high-season evenings and after heavy rain.
Resorts and villas: the practical details
Samui's high-end stays are spread around the coast and up the hills. The Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui and the W Koh Samui are near Maenam and the north, Banyan Tree Samui sits in its own cove south of Chaweng, the Six Senses Samui is on the Samrong headland, and the Conrad Koh Samui and the InterContinental Samui Baan Taling Ngam face sunset on the south-west coast. Many private villas are reached by steep, narrow concrete tracks. Ferries: Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and the mainland
- Koh Phangan and Koh Tao: high-speed catamarans leave from piers at Maenam, Bangrak (Big Buddha) and Nathon. Crossing times to Phangan are roughly 20 to 40 minutes.
- The mainland: vehicle and passenger ferries run from Nathon and Lipa Noi to Donsak, about 1 hour 30 minutes across, with the drive onward to Surat Thani.
- Surat Thani airport (URT): often cheaper than flying into Samui. It is about 60 to 70 km from Donsak pier, around an hour by road. A car can meet you at Surat Thani, cross on the vehicle ferry, and drive you to your door on Samui as one booked intercity transfer.

Island days and hourly bookings

Weather and the Samui calendar
Samui's weather differs from Phuket and the Andaman coast. The driest, busiest months are usually January to April, and July and August are also popular. The heaviest rain falls from about October to early December, when storms can close some ferry routes.
- April 13 to 15: Songkran, the Thai New Year, with water fights on the main roads.
- Monthly: the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin on neighbouring Koh Phangan, when boats and piers are crowded.
- November, usually: Loy Krathong, with candlelit floats on the sea and ponds.

Road safety on Samui
Thailand drives on the left, and cars are right-hand drive. Samui's roads are narrow, hilly in places and busy with visitors on rented scooters, many of them inexperienced. The ring road is well surfaced, but side roads can be steep and slippery after rain. This is one of the strongest reasons to be driven: the chauffeur knows the gradients, the blind corners and the evening crowd in Chaweng.
Arrival rules for Thailand
All foreign nationals complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online in the 72 hours before arrival, whether or not they hold a visa. It is free on the official TDAC portal.
