Phuket International Airport: terminals and pickup
Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits at the northern tip of the island beside Nai Yang and Mai Khao beaches, operated by Airports of Thailand. International flights use the international terminal that opened in 2016, and domestic flights use the older terminal next to it, a short walk apart.
Curbside pickup at the designated pick-up area for pre-arranged cars is the standard arrangement. A name-board meet and greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations, and the booking engine shows whether one is available for your flight. Arriving in Thailand: 30-day visa exemption and the TDAC
Two things changed recently. Since 1 May 2025 every foreign arrival must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before landing, through the official TDAC portal. And from 15 September 2026 the visa-exempt tourist stay for nationals of 60 countries and territories, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia, fell from 60 to 30 days, extendable once at an immigration office. Other nationalities may have a 15-day exemption or need a visa on arrival. International arrivals at HKT often queue at immigration in the late afternoon, which the 60-minute included wait covers.

Because the airport is at the north end, the northern beaches are close and the famous southern ones are not.

The hill road over Patong Hill is steep and winding, so large vans take it slowly, and the junctions around the Heroines Monument and Central Phuket slow everything at rush hour.
Yacht marinas and piers
Phuket is Thailand's main yachting base, and marina transfers are a large part of chauffeur work here, from owners joining their boats to charter guests with a week's luggage.
- Yacht Haven Phuket Marina, on the northeast coast, about 15 to 20 minutes from the airport, a common base for Phang Nga Bay cruising.

Phuket through the year
- November to April: the dry, high season on the Andaman coast, with the busiest airport weeks around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.
- April 13 to 15: Songkran, the Thai New Year, when water fights close parts of Patong and Phuket Town.
- May to October: the southwest monsoon. Rough seas close some beaches to swimming and can cancel boat trips, and heavy rain slows the roads.
- September or October (usually): the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, nine days of processions from Chinese shrines in Phuket Town, with road closures in the old town.
- November (usually): Loy Krathong, and the Laguna Phuket Triathlon.
- December (usually): the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, sailed off Kata beach, when marinas and southern hotels fill.
Exact dates move with the lunar calendar or organisers; check the Tourism Authority of Thailand before you book.
Weddings, villa groups and events
Beach weddings in Kata, Surin or at the Laguna resorts often need several cars and a van for the band or photographer; plan them through wedding limousine and car service. Driving on Phuket
Thailand drives on the left. The island's main artery, Thepkasattri Road (Route 402), runs from the airport and the bridges south to Phuket Town and carries most of the traffic; Route 4029 and the hill roads link to the west-coast beaches. Motorbikes are everywhere, often ridden by visitors unfamiliar with the roads, so chauffeurs drive with care rather than speed. Flash flooding in the monsoon affects a few low stretches near Patong and Phuket Town.

Leaving Phuket: how early to set off
Departure timing on Phuket depends almost entirely on where you start. From Laguna, Bang Tao or Mai Khao, a pickup 2 hours 30 minutes before an international flight is usually comfortable. From Patong or Kamala, allow about 3 hours, and from Kata, Karon, Rawai or Cape Panwa closer to 3 hours 30 minutes, because the whole route runs north through the island's busiest junctions. Add time on high-season Saturdays, when villa changeovers and resort checkouts fill the roads, and in the monsoon, when a storm can slow the main road to a crawl. Guests leaving a yacht at Ao Po or Boat Lagoon should agree a disembarkation time with the captain and book the car for 30 minutes after it, so luggage can come ashore without a rush.
