Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang: which airport are you using?

Suvarnabhumi (BKK)
Suvarnabhumi is the main international gateway, about 30 km east of the centre in Samut Prakan. Full-service carriers from Europe, the Middle East, North America and most of Asia use it. Don Mueang is Bangkok's older airport, about 24 km north of the centre, and today it is the base for low-cost airlines on domestic and regional routes, such as flights to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi. Terminal 1 handles international flights and Terminal 2 domestic ones. The Don Mueang Tollway runs straight down to Din Daeng and the city, so the trip to Ratchadaphisek or Phaya Thai is often 30 to 50 minutes, longer at peak times. Because many DMK flights are domestic, the 30-minute included wait applies unless you arrive from abroad.
A transfer between the two airports is a common booking for people who connect from a long-haul flight to a budget airline. Allow at least 60 to 90 minutes for the drive alone, more in the evening peak, and do not book tight self-transfers.
Arriving in Thailand: TDAC and visa rules in 2026
Every foreign national entering Thailand must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arrival; it replaced the paper TM6 form in May 2025 and can be submitted in the 72 hours before landing on the official TDAC portal. It is free, so ignore paid look-alike sites. Visa-exemption rules changed in September 2026, when the permitted stay for many nationalities dropped from 60 to 30 days with an optional extension at immigration. Confirm your own situation with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you fly.
Immigration queues at Suvarnabhumi vary from ten minutes to well over an hour when several long-haul flights land together in the late evening. Bangkok traffic and the expressways
Traffic is the single biggest factor in Bangkok timings. The morning peak runs roughly 7 to 9.30 am and the evening peak from about 4.30 to 7.30 pm, and Friday evenings before a long weekend are the slowest of all. As rough midday guidance, Silom to Asoke is about 6 km and 20 to 40 minutes, and Sathorn to Rama IX about 10 km and 25 to 50 minutes. The Pattaya run uses Motorway 7, a tolled, fast road straight from the airport area to Chonburi, so it is one of the most predictable long drives in the country. Hua Hin is a different story: the route follows Rama II Road southwest and then Phetkasem Road, both prone to slow sections, and Friday afternoons can push it past four hours. Leaving before 3 pm or after 8 pm helps. Rail stations in Bangkok
Long-distance trains now start at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, the large station at Bang Sue that took over most intercity services from the historic Hua Lamphong station in 2023.
