LAX to Malibu: timing and routes
From LAX, the drive to the Malibu Pier and Civic Center is about 25 miles, typically 40 to 75 minutes via the I-405 and I-10 to PCH. Point Dume and Zuma Beach add another 20 minutes. PCH, the canyons and fire season
Pacific Coast Highway carries almost everyone. The canyon roads, Topanga Canyon Boulevard, Malibu Canyon Road, Kanan Dume Road and Decker Canyon, link PCH with the 101 Freeway and are the alternatives when the coast road is closed. They are narrow and winding, which suits sedans and SUVs better than a Sprinter.
Malibu has had several serious wildfires, including Woolsey in 2018, Franklin in December 2024 and the Palisades Fire in January 2025, which burned homes along PCH between Pacific Palisades and eastern Malibu. Rebuilding has brought closures, lane restrictions and work zones, and winter storms can bring rockfall and slides. Speed enforcement on PCH is heavy.
