Entry to Makkah: who may go
Makkah is open only to Muslims, and non-Muslims may not enter the city. Signposted checkpoints on the approach highways direct non-Muslim traffic onto bypass roads, and this applies to drivers as much as passengers. Every Makkah trip is therefore driven by a Muslim chauffeur of a vetted affiliate. Non-Muslim travellers visiting the region can book chauffeur service in Jeddah or Medina, where visitors of any faith may stay outside the central sacred area of the Prophet's Mosque.

JED is the main gateway. Most international flights use Terminal 1, the North Terminal handles further scheduled services, and the separate Hajj Terminal is used for pilgrimage flights in season. Standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged pickup area of your terminal; a name-board meet and greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Flights are tracked. For JED arrivals the chauffeur waits 60 minutes after an international landing or 30 after a domestic one, with station and hotel pickups including 15 minutes and 15-minute blocks after that. Immigration at JED in Ramadan can take well over an hour, and the included time starts at actual landing.
Ihram and the miqat on the way in
International pilgrims flying to Jeddah pass their miqat in the air and normally enter ihram before or during the flight. Pilgrims coming by road stop at the miqat on their route: Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) from Medina, and Qarn al-Manazil at As-Sayl al-Kabir, or Wadi Muharram on the Al Hada road, from Taif. Tell the desk if you need the stop and it is built into the trip time.
The Haramain railway to Makkah
The Haramain High-Speed Railway links Makkah, Jeddah (including a station at King Abdulaziz Airport), King Abdullah Economic City and Madinah over about 450 km. Makkah station is in the Al Rusaifah district, about 3-4 km from the Grand Mosque. A chauffeur meeting the train is a practical way to get bags and family to a hotel when taxis queue after a large arrival.
Hotels near the Grand Mosque and drop-off rules
The towers facing the Haram, including the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower, Raffles Makkah Palace and Swissôtel Makkah in the Abraj Al Bait complex, and the Jabal Omar hotels such as Conrad Makkah and Hyatt Regency Makkah, are reached through tunnels and service roads. Authorities close parts of the central area to private cars around prayers and in peak periods, so the drop may be at the hotel's vehicle entrance or an authorised point with a short walk. The chauffeur knows the current closures and will say where to meet for the return.
Hajj season: what a private car can and cannot do
Hajj falls in Dhu al-Hijjah and moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year; in 2026 the Day of Arafah was 26 May. In the weeks before Hajj, entry to Makkah is limited to Hajj permit holders, residents with the required permits and authorised workers, and Umrah permits are paused. Movement between Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah is run by licensed Hajj service companies, buses and the Mashaer train, not private chauffeurs. Umrah in Ramadan and other busy periods
The last ten nights of Ramadan bring the largest crowds of the year, and roads around the Haram slow to walking pace after taraweeh and qiyam prayers. Plan pickups well after a prayer, and book the return to JED early: flights after Eid are heavily booked and the drive can take over two hours.

- Makkah to Taif: about 90 km over the Al Hada escarpment road, 1h 15-1h 45.

Vehicles for pilgrims
Couples use a business or Luxury Executive Sedan; families take an executive SUV; larger family groups and elderly pilgrims with wheelchairs choose a Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van. Driving, visas and practical notes
Traffic is on the right and there are no tolls. The Saudi tourist eVisa is available online to many nationalities and allows Umrah outside the Hajj season with a Nusuk permit. Carry passport and permit on you; checkpoints may ask for them.
Cancellation
Makkah bookings cancelled over 72 hours before pickup are free. From 72 hours the fee is 10%, from 48 hours 50%, and from 24 hours, or if nobody travels, 100%.
