Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport (MED)
MED is about 15-20 km northeast of the Prophet's Mosque, a drive of roughly 20 to 35 minutes. It handles domestic flights and a growing number of international routes, and pilgrims increasingly fly in here and leave from Jeddah, or the reverse. Standard pickup is at the airport's designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals; a name-board meet and greet inside the hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Every flight is tracked. At MED the car waits 60 minutes after an international landing and 30 minutes after a domestic one; hotel and station pickups include 15 minutes, and extra time runs in 15-minute blocks.
Who may enter the centre of Medina?
Visitors of any faith may travel to Medina, stay in its hotels and use its roads. The central sacred area around Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque, is reserved for Muslims and is marked by signs and gates; non-Muslim visitors should follow the signs and stay outside that boundary. Makkah is different: it is open only to Muslims, and non-Muslims may not enter the city at all.
Nusuk: Rawdah appointments and Umrah permits
Praying in the Rawdah inside the Prophet's Mosque requires a timed permit booked on the Nusuk app. Slots are released a few days to two weeks ahead and are limited, so book the permit before you fix the car. If you continue to Makkah for Umrah, the Umrah permit is a separate booking on Nusuk. Share your slot times with the desk and the chauffeur plans the hotel pickup around them.
Hotels around the Prophet's Mosque and how drop-offs work
The hotels closest to the mosque, such as The Oberoi Madinah, Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick, Pullman Zamzam Madinah and Dar Al Hijra InterContinental, sit in the central area where streets fill with worshippers around each of the five prayers. Traffic police close some approaches at prayer times, so the chauffeur may drop at the hotel's vehicle entrance on a ring road or at the nearest permitted point and help with bags. Pickups are best set 30 to 45 minutes after a prayer ends rather than just before it starts.
Ziyarat in Medina: the usual half-day loop
A ziyarat tour with an hourly car typically covers:
- Quba Mosque, about 3-4 km south of the centre, the first mosque built in Islam.
- Masjid al-Qiblatayn, where the qibla changed direction.
- Mount Uhud and the martyrs' cemetery, about 5 km north.
- The Seven Mosques area near the site of the Battle of the Trench.
- The King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex on the Tabuk road, where visits allow it.
Three to four hours is comfortable. Book it as hourly chauffeur service so the car stays with you.
Haramain High-Speed Railway at Madinah station
The Haramain line runs about 450 km from Madinah through King Abdullah Economic City and Jeddah to Makkah at up to 300 km/h, and the fastest trains reach Makkah in around two hours twenty minutes. Madinah station lies roughly 7-11 km from the Prophet's Mosque, 15 to 25 minutes by car. A chauffeur can take you from the hotel to the train and another can meet you at Makkah station, which keeps luggage off crowded buses.

Pilgrims driving to Makkah for Umrah stop at the Dhul Hulayfah miqat at Abyar Ali, just south of the city, to enter ihram; tell the desk and the chauffeur builds the stop into the trip. Ramadan, Hajj season and busy months
The last ten nights of Ramadan and the weeks around Hajj are the busiest in Medina, with long waits at hotel entrances and heavy traffic after the night prayers. Book early and allow extra time. Hajj follows the Islamic calendar and moves about 11 days earlier each year; in 2026 the Day of Arafah fell on 26 May. Entry to Makkah is restricted to Hajj permit holders in the weeks before Hajj, so check the dates on Nusuk before planning a Medina to Makkah car in that period.
Local driving notes and entry
Saudi traffic drives on the right and there are no road tolls. Many nationalities can obtain the Saudi tourist eVisa online, and it allows Umrah outside the Hajj season when combined with a Nusuk permit. Dress modestly in the central area, and expect the chauffeur to pause for prayer on a long trip if timing allows.
Cancellation and corporate travel
Pilgrimage plans change, so note the terms: free cancellation more than 72 hours out, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or on a no-show.
