AlUla International Airport (ULH)
ULH, officially Prince Abdul Majeed bin Abdulaziz International Airport, lies roughly 20 to 25 km southeast of AlUla town. Domestic flights arrive from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, with seasonal international services during the winter season. The terminal is small, so the walk from the aircraft to the curb is short. Pickup is at the designated pre-arranged pickup area in front of arrivals; the chauffeur messages you the car details after landing. A greeting inside the ULH arrivals hall with your name on a board is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations.
The car follows your flight in real time. From touchdown you have an hour of included waiting on an international arrival, 30 minutes on a domestic flight such as the Riyadh service, and 15 minutes for other pickups, after which time is charged in 15-minute blocks. Hegra and the heritage sites
Hegra, known historically as Mada'in Salih, is Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds more than a hundred monumental Nabataean tombs cut into sandstone; see the UNESCO listing. Access to Hegra is by ticketed tours that start from the official visitor centre, so the chauffeur drops you there and waits or returns at the tour's end; private cars do not drive freely among the tombs. The other sites are closer to town. The AlUla Old Town is a mud-brick settlement with the restored AlUla Old Town market street and the Dar Tantora hotel. Dadan, the capital of the ancient Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, and Jabal Ikmah, with its rock inscriptions, sit just north of the town. Elephant Rock, the huge natural arch shaped like an elephant, is best visited near sunset. A full day covering several of these is an hourly chauffeur booking.
Resorts and where the car goes
Most luxury stays are outside the town. The Banyan Tree AlUla and Habitas AlUla lie in Ashar Valley, near the mirrored Maraya concert hall. Shaden Resort is in the canyon country north of town, and Dar Tantora The House Hotel is inside the Old Town oasis. Resort gates often control vehicle access, and some tent and villa areas use internal buggies; the chauffeur takes you to the reception or the arrival pavilion. Hotels are named only as destinations.
Seasons and events
- October to April: the visitor season, with daytime temperatures that make touring comfortable. Winter nights in the desert can be cold.
- December to January: Winter at Tantora and the AlUla Moments calendar, with concerts at Maraya.
- February: AlUla Arts Festival and Desert X AlUla in some years.
- Winter months: the AlUla Skies hot-air balloon experiences, depending on the season's programme.
- May to September: extreme heat, often above 40 degrees Celsius; tours shift to early morning and evening.

Driving in the desert: what to expect
Saudi Arabia drives on the right. Highways are generally good, but the region is remote: fuel stations and phone coverage can be sparse between towns, and camels wander onto roads, especially at dusk and at night. Speed cameras enforce limits strictly across the kingdom. Sand and gravel stretches near resorts and viewpoints are why an SUV is the default. Long night drives to Madinah or Tabuk are possible but are planned with rest stops.
The road to Madinah and beyond
The drive to Madinah is about 300 to 330 km, usually three and a half to four hours, and is popular for travellers combining a visit to AlUla with Madinah; note that the central area around the Prophet's Mosque has rules on who may enter. Tabuk, in the north, is a similar distance. These are intercity transfers with a fixed fare, and multi-day desert itineraries are planned by a coordinator and confirmed in writing.
Film crews, events and VIP travel
AlUla hosts concerts, fashion shows, film productions and government summits at Maraya and in the desert. Production teams and artist entourages use entertainment and touring planning, and private jet arrivals into ULH use private aviation coordination with the FBO. Visas and local rules
Citizens of many countries can apply for a Saudi tourist e-visa online or receive a visa on arrival; check eligibility on the official Visit Saudi visa portal. Modest dress is expected at heritage sites, and Saudi law is strict on alcohol and drugs. Drones need permits, which matters at Hegra and around Elephant Rock.
