King Abdulaziz International: Terminal 1, the North Terminal and the Hajj Terminal
King Abdulaziz International Airport lies about 20 km north of central Jeddah and handles one of the most seasonal passenger flows of any airport, because it is the main air gateway for pilgrims heading to Makkah.
- Terminal 1 is the large new terminal that opened in stages from 2019. It handles Saudia, most Saudi carriers and nearly all full-service international airlines. It connects directly to the KAIA station of the Haramain High-Speed Railway.
- The North Terminal handles a smaller group of international flights, mainly some foreign and low-cost carriers.
- The Hajj Terminal, with its tented roof, operates for pilgrim charter flights during the Hajj and Umrah peaks and is not a general-purpose terminal.
Curbside pickup at the designated area for pre-arranged vehicles at your terminal is standard. A name-board meet and greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations, and the engine tells you whether your flight is covered. Pilgrim traffic, Makkah and the rule for non-Muslims
Jeddah's traffic pattern is shaped by Umrah, which runs year-round, and by Hajj, which falls in the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah and moves about 11 days earlier each year. Ramadan, particularly its last ten nights, brings very heavy volumes on the Jeddah to Makkah highway and at the airport.
Makkah is about 80 km east of Jeddah, typically 60 to 90 minutes by road outside peak periods. Two facts matter for booking:
- Non-Muslims may not enter Makkah. Checkpoints on the approach roads enforce this, and signposted routes take other traffic around the city. We only book trips into Makkah for travellers who may lawfully enter it.
- Pilgrims need the right permit. Umrah requires a permit issued through the official Nusuk platform, and Hajj requires a Hajj permit. During Hajj season, access to Makkah is restricted to authorised vehicles and permit holders, which affects which cars can make the drive.
The Haramain High-Speed Railway is often faster than the road during peaks. From the KAIA station at Terminal 1, the journey to Makkah takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes and to Madinah about 1 hour 45 minutes; timetables are on the Saudi Arabia Railways site. In Jeddah, the railway also stops at the Al Sulaymaniyah station in the city. Many travellers book a car to or from Al Sulaymaniyah to connect with the train rather than driving the full distance.
Where business happens in Jeddah
Jeddah stretches north to south along the Red Sea, and addresses are best described by district:
- Al Rawdah, Al Andalus and the Tahlia Street area: offices, retail and hotels in the central band of the city.
- Al Shati and the North Corniche: waterfront hotels, restaurants and the Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina.
- Al Balad: the UNESCO-listed historic district of coral-stone houses, now under restoration, with narrow lanes where cars drop at the edge.

The Red Sea projects: can you drive there from Jeddah?
Saudi Arabia's Red Sea tourism developments lie well north of Jeddah. The Red Sea destination, developed by Red Sea Global, sits on the coast and islands between Umluj and Al Wajh, roughly 500 to 600 km from Jeddah, and has its own Red Sea International Airport. AMAALA lies further north, and NEOM is further still, near the Gulf of Aqaba.
For most visitors, the practical plan is to fly from Jeddah or Riyadh to Red Sea International and use the resort's own arrival arrangements. A road trip of six hours or more is possible and can be booked as a fixed-fare intercity transfer, but it is a long day in desert heat, and resort access roads have their own rules. Closer to Jeddah, King Abdullah Economic City is about 100 to 130 km north and is served by both the highway and the Haramain railway.
Cruise passengers and the port
Red Sea cruises call at a terminal inside Jeddah Islamic Port, south of Al Balad. Jeddah uses the same entry framework as the rest of Saudi Arabia. The tourist eVisa, available to nationals of roughly 65 to 70 countries, can be used for tourism, family visits and Umrah outside the Hajj season. Driving in Jeddah
Traffic drives on the right. King Abdulaziz Road, Madinah Road and Prince Sultan Road carry most north-south traffic and are congested at the start and end of the working day and late in the evening, when Jeddah goes out for dinner. There are no urban tolls. The Friday-Saturday weekend brings heavy evening traffic along the Corniche. During Ramadan, the pre-iftar hour is the hardest time to cross the city.
Airline crews, delegations and group movements
Jeddah is a crew base and a layover city for many carriers, and crew transport follows fixed patterns: an airport pickup timed to on-blocks, a hotel drop, and a return timed to the report time. - Give the district, the street and the nearest landmark. Many Jeddah buildings are better known by name than by number.

- For Al Balad, name the gate or square where you want to be dropped, since the lanes inside are too narrow for larger vehicles.
