Two bridges, one toll direction
Penang Island is linked to the mainland by the Penang Bridge (about 13.5 km) from Gelugor to Perai and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (about 24 km) from Batu Maung to Batu Kawan. Tolls are collected only in the mainland-to-island direction. The Raja Tun Uda ferry between Butterworth and George Town carries foot passengers. Driving is on the left, and inner George Town has narrow one-way streets, so hotel entrances in the heritage zone are often reached from a side lane.
George Town, Gurney and Batu Ferringhi
The historic core of George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed jointly with Melaka in 2008 as the Melaka and George Town property. Its clan houses, shophouse streets and waterfront are best seen on foot with the car waiting outside the zone. Butterworth station and the train to Kuala Lumpur
Butterworth, on the mainland, is Penang's railway station. Electric Train Service (ETS) trains run to KL Sentral in about four to four and a half hours, and north towards Padang Besar on the Thai border. Timetables are on KTMB. Continue to Langkawi by ferry or a short flight, drive to Kuala Lumpur on the North-South Expressway, or fly to Singapore. Long drives are priced as intercity transfers.
