Almaty International Airport: the new international terminal
The airport is on the north-eastern edge of the city. A new international terminal opened in June 2024, and the older building now handles domestic flights, so check which one your flight uses on the Almaty Airport site. Winter driving and local realities
Kazakhstan drives on the right. Winters are cold and snowy, and temperature inversions trap smog over the city on still days from November to February. Traffic is heavy on Al-Farabi, Abay and Sain at peak hours, and the metro runs a single line under the centre. Citizens of many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and EU states, can visit Kazakhstan without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, and some neighbouring countries have longer allowances.
