Arriving at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD)
GYD lies on the Absheron Peninsula about 25 km northeast of the centre. The main terminal, Terminal 1, handles international flights; check your ticket, since some services have used a second terminal. Your chauffeur waits at the airport's designated pickup area for pre-booked cars outside arrivals and sends the vehicle details once you have passed passport control and customs. A meet and greet in the arrivals hall with a name board is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Flights are tracked, and waiting is 60 minutes from actual landing on international arrivals, 30 minutes on domestic flights and 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix: how to move around the street circuit
Formula 1 races on the Baku City Circuit, a street track of about 6 km that runs along the seafront Boulevard, past Government House and through the narrow lanes beside the walls of Icherisheher, the Old City. The event is held in September; in 2026 the race is on Saturday 26 September, moved forward a day for Remembrance Day on 27 September. Barriers and grandstands go up weeks before and many central streets close from Thursday to Sunday.

- Hotels inside the circuit, such as those on Neftchilar Avenue, have restricted vehicle access; allow time for a short walk.

Districts, hotels and venues
The Boulevard and Fountains Square are the social centre, with Nizami Street for shopping. The Flame Towers on the hill above hold the Fairmont Baku. Other regular pickups are the Four Seasons Hotel Baku on the seafront, the JW Marriott Absheron by Freedom Square, the Hilton Baku and The Ritz-Carlton Baku. The White City, east of the centre, is a redevelopment of former oil land with offices and residences. Day trips from Baku
Gobustan, with its petroglyphs and mud volcanoes, is about an hour southwest. Yanar Dag, the burning hillside, is around 30 minutes north. Shamakhi and its wineries are two hours west, and Gabala, in the Caucasus foothills, is a long day or an overnight. These are planned as city tours and day trips or as a one-way intercity transfer, with the chauffeur staying for the day where you want it.
Choosing a vehicle in Baku

Local driving realities
Azerbaijan drives on the right. Traffic cameras are everywhere and fines are strict, so chauffeurs keep to limits. The Khazri, a strong north wind, can blow hard off the Caspian and affect flights. Rush hour on Heydar Aliyev Avenue and around 28 May metro station is heavy. There are no toll roads in the city.
Visas and border notes for 2026
Most visitors need a visa. Citizens of around 80 countries, including all EU states, can apply online for the ASAN e-visa, which allows a stay of up to 30 days; apply on the official e-visa portal. Some nationalities enter visa-free. Azerbaijan's land borders have been largely closed to regular crossings since 2020, with only limited rail reopening with Georgia in 2026, so arriving by air is the practical route.
