From Ben Gurion Airport to Haifa
Most visitors fly into Ben Gurion, about 95-100 km south of Haifa. Terminal 3 handles most international flights and Terminal 1 some low-cost and seasonal services. Standard pickup is at the terminal's designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals; a name-board meet and greet in the hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. The drive takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes on the coastal Route 2, or on the tolled Route 6 when Route 2 is jammed. Flights are tracked; waiting included is 60 minutes from landing on international arrivals, then 15-minute blocks. Passport control and security questioning at TLV can take a while, so the included hour is often used.
Haifa Airport (HFA)
Haifa's small airport by the bay handles a limited schedule, mostly domestic flights to Eilat and some short regional routes. It is 10-15 minutes from downtown. Domestic arrivals get 30 minutes of included waiting.
Entry: the ETA-IL
Travellers from visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the EU, must hold an approved ETA-IL before boarding a flight to Israel. It is applied for online through the Population and Immigration Authority and is usually processed within a few days. Cruise passengers are processed by the ship and border officials at the port.
Port of Haifa: cruise terminal and crew changes
The Port of Haifa is Israel's largest port and the main cruise port in the north, with the passenger terminal beside the Haifa Center HaShmona rail station and a short drive from the German Colony. Cars wait in the terminal's designated pickup area. Shore days usually combine the Bahá'í Gardens, Akko and Caesarea, or head inland to Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee. Mount Carmel, the German Colony and the lower city
Haifa climbs from the bay up Mount Carmel. The Bahá'í Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site, run in terraces down the slope to the German Colony, whose Ben Gurion Avenue is lined with restaurants. The Carmel Center at the top holds hotels such as the Dan Carmel Haifa and Dan Panorama Haifa, while the Bay Club Hotel sits in the lower city. The Technion and the MATAM high-tech park draw business visitors, and the Carmelit, a short underground funicular, links downtown with the Carmel. Steep, narrow streets make a local chauffeur useful.
Nazareth, the Galilee and Druze villages
Christian pilgrims often base themselves in Haifa. A typical Galilee day takes in the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth and Cana, then Capernaum, Tabgha and the Mount of Beatitudes on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, finishing at the Yardenit baptismal site near the lake's southern end. With stops that is roughly 180 to 220 km of driving, so book the car for eight to ten hours through city tours and day trips. Closer to home, the Druze villages of Daliyat al-Karmel and Isfiya on the Carmel ridge are 20 to 30 minutes from the Carmel Center and fill a short afternoon.
Akko and Caesarea on a port day
Akko's walled Old City, with its Crusader halls and fishing harbour, is a UNESCO site across the bay, and Caesarea's Roman theatre and harbour lie south along the coast. Both fit a normal cruise call with lunch if you leave the terminal by about 08:30 and plan to be back an hour before all-aboard.
Shabbat and holidays
Israel Railways does not run from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening, and most buses stop too. Private chauffeur trips can run on Shabbat, which is when many cruise passengers and airport arrivals need them most; book ahead, as availability is tighter. Major holidays such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur (when roads are almost empty of traffic) and Passover change the pattern. The Haifa International Film Festival is usually held during Sukkot in late September or October.

Driving, tolls and security
Traffic drives on the right. Route 6 (the Cross-Israel Highway) and the Carmel Tunnels under the city charge electronic tolls by plate.
