Phnom Penh's new airport: what changed
On 9 September 2025, all commercial flights moved from the old Phnom Penh International Airport at Pochentong to Techo International Airport (KTI), built on the border of Kandal and Takeo provinces south of the city. The old airport code PNH no longer receives passenger flights. This matters for planning: the old airport was about 10 km from the Royal Palace, while Techo is roughly 20 to 27 km away, and the drive takes much longer than older travel guides suggest. If you are booking an arrival, enter your flight number and the engine sets KTI automatically.
Pickup at Techo International Airport
Standard pickup is at the terminal's designated pre-arranged vehicle pickup area outside arrivals. Your chauffeur messages the plate number and meeting point once you land. A meet and greet inside the arrivals hall with a name board is an add-on. Add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Every airport pickup is flight-tracked. Waiting included is 60 minutes from actual landing for international flights, 30 minutes for domestic flights and 15 minutes for other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. - BKK1 (Boeung Keng Kang 1) and Chamkarmon: embassies, NGOs, international schools, restaurants and serviced apartments.
- Tonle Bassac and Koh Pich: the riverside towers, the exhibition and convention halls on Diamond Island, and new condominiums.
- Toul Kork and Sen Sok: residential districts to the north and west, with Aeon Mall Sen Sok City.
- Chroy Changvar: the peninsula across the Japanese Friendship Bridge, with large hotels and event venues.
A day split between a ministry in Daun Penh and an office in BKK1 suits the hourly chauffeur service.
Hotels and venues
Raffles Hotel Le Royal, open since the 1920s near Wat Phnom, remains the classic address. The Rosewood Phnom Penh occupies the top floors of Vattanac Capital tower, the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra sits on the Bassac river, and the Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh is a short walk from the Royal Palace. Conferences and trade fairs use the halls on Koh Pich, and the Morodok Techo National Stadium, north of the centre, hosted the 2023 Southeast Asian Games and holds concerts and football internationals. For big events the chauffeur uses a side street and calls you with the exact point.
Seasons, holidays and festivals
- Mid-April: Khmer New Year, a three-day national holiday. Many residents leave for the provinces, so the city is quiet and the highways are full.
- May: the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, a traditional event near the palace.
- September or October: Pchum Ben, a 15-day festival for ancestors, ending in public holidays.
- November, usually: Bon Om Touk, the Water Festival, with boat races on the Tonle Sap in front of the palace and heavy riverside closures.
- May to October: the rainy season, with short, heavy downpours that flood some streets.

Driving in Phnom Penh
Cambodia drives on the right, and most cars are left-hand drive. The main arteries are Norodom, Monivong, Russian Federation and Mao Tse Toung boulevards, and traffic mixes cars, tuk-tuks, motorbikes and delivery trucks at close quarters. The chauffeur allows for sudden turns and for motorbikes riding against the flow on the kerb side. The Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville Expressway, a toll road, has cut the coast run to about two hours. The riverfront is busy on weekend evenings; pickups there may move one block inland.
Rail and road connections
Phnom Penh Royal Railway Station, a restored 1930s building near Monivong Boulevard, has trains south to Kampot and Sihanoukville and north-west towards Battambang and Poipet; services are infrequent, so check before you plan around them. Most visitors to Angkor fly to Siem Reap, but a road transfer is practical for groups or for travellers who want to stop at Kampong Thom. Road trips to the coast and to the Vietnamese border at Bavet are booked as intercity transfers.
Visas and the e-Arrival card
Most foreign visitors need a visa. A single-entry tourist e-visa, valid for a 30-day stay, is issued through the official Cambodia e-visa portal, and visa on arrival remains available at the international airports for many nationalities. All air arrivals also submit the free Cambodia e-Arrival card (CeA) within seven days before landing on arrival.gov.kh; it replaced the paper immigration, health and customs forms. Standard Sedans and Luxury Executive Sedans suit one or two travellers, executive SUVs are popular for the long airport run and for three passengers, and Standard Black SUVs, Sprinters and coaches take groups.
