Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN): three terminals
SGN lies in the Tan Binh area, only 6 to 8 km north of the centre, which makes it one of the closest major airports to a city core in Asia. Terminal 2 handles international flights. Terminal 3, opened in April 2025 south of the existing buildings, handles domestic flights for Vietnam Airlines and several other carriers. Terminal 1 keeps the remaining domestic services. Your chauffeur waits at the designated pickup lanes for pre-booked cars at your terminal and sends the car plate and lane number when you land. A meet and greet at the arrivals exit with a name board is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations.

Long Thanh: the new Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai, about 40 km east of the centre, is being brought into commercial service in stages during 2026, and most international flights are planned to move there once it is fully open. Check which airport your ticket shows; the drive from Long Thanh to District 1 is typically 50 to 90 minutes on the Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway.
District 1 traffic: what to expect
The drive from SGN to the District 1 hotels is short in distance but slow at peak hours, because Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Hai Ba Trung and the roads around the airport carry tens of thousands of motorbikes. Plan on:

Peak hours run roughly 7:00 to 9:00 and 16:30 to 19:00, and a sudden afternoon storm in the rainy season can double any time on this table. Chauffeurs drive defensively: motorbikes pass on both sides, and horns are used as a signal rather than in anger. Vietnam drives on the right.
A note on district names
On 1 July 2025 Ho Chi Minh City merged with Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces, and Vietnam removed the district level of local government, so the old numbered districts are no longer official units. Hotels, offices and locals still use "District 1", "District 2" and "District 7" every day, and so do we. Give a street address and the chauffeur finds it either way.

- District 1: Dong Khoi, Nguyen Hue walking street, Ben Thanh market, the Opera House and most international offices and five-star hotels.
- Thu Thiem and Thao Dien: the new financial district across the Saigon River and the expatriate neighbourhood of the former District 2.
- District 7 and Phu My Hung: a planned township with the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC), international schools and corporate offices.
- District 3 and Binh Thanh: consulates, villas and the Landmark 81 tower at Vinhomes Central Park.
- Industrial zones in the former Binh Duong: factories and supplier parks 30 to 50 km north.

Cruise ships at Phu My
Large cruise ships calling at Ho Chi Minh City usually berth at Phu My, on the Thi Vai river about 80 km southeast of the centre, because they cannot sail up to the city. Smaller ships may berth closer in. We collect at the terminal's vehicle area and run the shore day into the city, which leaves several hours in District 1 after a drive of 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way. - Cu Chi tunnels: 1.5 to 2 hours each way; half-day or full-day.
- My Tho and Ben Tre in the Mekong Delta: about 70-90 km, 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Can Tho and the Cai Rang floating market: about 170 km, 3.5 to 4 hours; best as an overnight trip.
- Vung Tau beaches: 2 to 2.5 hours.
- Tay Ninh and the Cao Dai Holy See: about 100 km, 2.5 hours.
- Mui Ne and Phan Thiet: about 200 km, 3.5 to 4 hours on the expressway.

Metro and trains
Metro Line 1, the city's first line, opened in December 2024 and runs from Ben Thanh in District 1 east to Suoi Tien, past Thao Dien. Saigon Railway Station in District 3 is the southern end of the North-South railway to Hanoi, a journey of about 30 to 35 hours. Chauffeurs collect at the station forecourt. Seasons and events
- Late January or February: Tet, the Lunar New Year, with the Nguyen Hue flower street; many businesses close for a week and roads empty, while flights and hotels fill.
- 30 April and 1 May: Reunification Day and Labour Day holidays, with heavy travel to the coast.
- May to November: the rainy season, with short, intense afternoon storms and street flooding.
- September: National Day on 2 September and the Mid-Autumn Festival, usually in September or early October.
- All year: trade fairs at SECC in District 7.

Vehicles in Ho Chi Minh City
Standard Sedans suit short hotel-to-office trips. Executive SUVs handle luggage for three and ride higher through flooded streets in the rainy season. Visas and entry
Vietnam's e-visa is open to all nationalities, valid for up to 90 days with single or multiple entry, and is applied for online only through the official Vietnam e-visa portal. Citizens of a list of countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea and the Nordic countries, can enter without a visa for up to 45 days; a further 12 European countries received the same exemption from August 2025. Citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and India need an e-visa. Passports need at least six months of validity.
