Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG)
The airport lies about 12 to 15 km southwest of the city, and the drive to the centre or the Boulevard Mohammed VI seafront usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. It has a single modern passenger terminal. Your chauffeur waits curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals and sends the car details once you land. A meet and greet inside arrivals is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Flights are tracked, so the pickup follows your real landing. Included waiting is 60 minutes on international flights, 30 minutes on domestic flights and 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. Tanger Ville port and Tanger Med: which ferry, which terminal?
This is the question most travellers get wrong, so confirm your ticket before booking the car.

The Tanger Ville marina and port were rebuilt as a passenger and leisure port, with the cruise terminal a short walk from the medina gates. Tanger Med, one of the largest ports on the Mediterranean, handles most vehicle ferries and the Algeciras route. Port information is on the Tanger Med and ANP sites.

Remember the clock: Morocco keeps UTC+1 for most of the year, while Spain moves to UTC+2 in summer, so Spanish time is usually an hour ahead from late March to late October.
Operation Marhaba and summer crossings
Each summer, usually from mid-June to mid-September, Morocco runs Operation Marhaba for the millions of Moroccans abroad who drive home through Spain. Queues at Tanger Med and on the approach roads can stretch for hours at the peak in late July and early August. For foot passengers with a chauffeur, the fix is simple: allow extra time and let the chauffeur choose the route. Cruise passengers at Tanger Ville are mostly unaffected.
Al Boraq from Tanger Ville

Districts, hotels and venues
The medina and Kasbah sit on the hill above the port, with the Grand Socco at their edge and the Petit Socco inside; cars stop at the gates, and the chauffeur walks you to the nearest point. The Ville Nouvelle around Boulevard Pasteur and Place de France is the colonial-era centre, home to the historic El Minzah hotel. Boulevard Mohammed VI follows the bay east toward Malabata, with the Hilton Tanger City Center and, on the headland, the Mövenpick Hotel & Casino Malabata. The Marshan and Old Mountain neighbourhoods to the west hold villas and the Fairmont Tazi Palace. Out of town, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules face the Atlantic. The rebuilt Ibn Batouta Stadium hosted Africa Cup of Nations matches in 2025 and early 2026.
Tangier is also an industrial centre, with the Tanger Automotive City and free zones near the airport and Tanger Med, so weekday traffic includes shift buses and trucks.
Day trips and intercity routes
- Asilah: about 45 km south on the Atlantic, 40 to 50 minutes.
- Tetouan: about 60 km, 50 to 70 minutes, a UNESCO-listed medina below the Rif.
- Chefchaouen: about 110 km, 2 to 2.5 hours on winding mountain roads.
- Fnideq and the Ceuta border: about 80 km, around 1 hour 15 minutes; the chauffeur drops at the crossing.
- Rabat: about 250 km, 2.5 to 3 hours on the A1 autoroute. Casablanca: about 340 km, 3.5 to 4 hours.

Driving in and around Tangier
Morocco drives on the right. Central Tangier is hilly, with steep one-way streets around the medina and the Kasbah, and parking is scarce near the Grand Socco. The A1 autoroute south to Rabat and the A4 spur to Tanger Med are tolled. Friday midday and summer evenings along the Boulevard Mohammed VI are the slowest times, and the coastal road to Ksar Sghir is narrow in places. Speed controls by the gendarmerie are frequent on the approaches to the city.
Vehicles for Tangier
A Standard Sedan works for most airport and station runs. An executive SUV handles ferry passengers with suitcases and the mountain road to Chefchaouen. Borders, entry and cancellation
Many nationalities, including EU, UK, US and Canadian citizens, can currently enter Morocco visa-free for up to 90 days. Crossing into Spain means entering the Schengen area, where the EU Entry/Exit System now registers non-EU travellers at the border, so allow time at Tarifa or Algeciras; check the rules for your passport on the EU's official pages before travelling. Tangier is generally safe for visitors; use normal precautions in the port area and follow your government's advice.
