Ballina is closest and quickest. Gold Coast Airport has more flights and suits international arrivals. Brisbane is the long-haul gateway; the run down the M1 Pacific Motorway is straightforward but long, and a chauffeur makes sense after an overnight flight. Watch the clocks: Queensland and NSW time
Byron Bay is in New South Wales; Gold Coast Airport and Brisbane are in Queensland, which does not observe daylight saving time. From early October to early April, Byron runs one hour ahead of the Queensland airports. The terminal at Coolangatta sits almost on the state line. Airport pickup: where the chauffeur waits

Local driving realities
Driving is on the left. Ewingsdale Road, the main way into town from the motorway, queues on summer afternoons and holiday weekends, and parking in the centre is scarce and metered. Hinterland roads are narrow and winding, and wet-weather closures happen on low-lying roads after heavy rain. The chauffeur drops you at the door, which is usually faster than hunting for a park.
