AMD airport: which terminal, and where is pickup?
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport lies at Hansol, about 9 km north of the old city and close to Motera. It has two passenger terminals. Terminal 2 handles international flights and, since 29 March 2026, all Air India and Air India Express services; Terminal 1 handles most other domestic airlines. Check your ticket, because the two terminals are separate buildings and a pickup set for the wrong one costs time.

Business districts and neighbourhoods
- SG Highway, Prahlad Nagar and Bodakdev: corporate offices, the big hotels and most client meetings.
- Ashram Road and Navrangpura: older commercial buildings, banks and the Gujarat University area.
- The walled city: UNESCO-listed since 2017, with the pols (lane neighbourhoods), Bhadra Fort and the Jama Masjid. Lanes are too narrow for large cars, so we drop at the nearest main road.
- Sabarmati Riverfront: promenades, the Atal footbridge and the Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi's base from 1917 to 1930.
- Sanand and Becharaji: automotive and electronics plants 25 to 90 km from the city.

Cricket, conventions and the event calendar
The Narendra Modi Stadium at Motera, the largest cricket stadium in the world by capacity, is about 10 minutes from the airport. On match nights police close roads around it, so we set drop and pickup points outside the cordon. Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar hosts the Vibrant Gujarat summit, usually in January in its active years, and a steady line of state and corporate conferences.

- September or October: Navratri, nine nights of garba that keep the city up late; evening pickups need extra time.

Trains and the future high-speed line
Ahmedabad Junction at Kalupur is the main station, with Vande Bharat and Shatabdi trains to Mumbai in roughly 5.5 to 7 hours and fast trains to Vadodara in about 1.5 hours. Sabarmati station is the site of the terminal for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail line under construction. Chauffeurs collect at the station forecourts.

Local driving notes and the prohibition rule
Traffic keeps to the left. SG Highway and the Sardar Patel Ring Road are the main arteries, and afternoon heat from April to June is intense; plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning or evening. Gujarat has prohibition on alcohol: visitors buy only with a permit from licensed outlets, and GIFT City has a limited relaxation for its offices and hotels. Consuming alcohol in a vehicle is not permitted.
Entry to India: e-Visa and e-Arrival Card
Many nationalities apply for an Indian e-Visa online at Indian Visa Online; Ahmedabad is among the airports that accept e-Visa arrivals. Foreign nationals also fill in the digital e-Arrival Card within the 72 hours before landing. Allow extra time for immigration on international flights; your waiting time starts at the actual landing.
